Our last show was full of some of the funniest moments I’ve seen in a long time!
From NFL huddles, to some crazy live super bowl commercials, to a musical full of romance, comedy, and tee-pees dotting the park, I couldn’t stop laughing.
Events like Groundhog Day and Super-bowl Sunday don’t often come in the same weekend. (At the very most, once a year, right?) And with Valentine’s Day on the doorstep, this show delivered on elements of all three.
Our last show was full of really great, honest scene work. My favorite moment was Marin and I’s first scene in the musical. We really trusted each other, were patient, and really let ourselves play and discover our characters, which made the rest of the musical so easy!
With an amazing cast of Zanon Schmidt, Ali Kinkade, Marin Miller, Kirby Heyborne (and myself, blush), we had an amazing time.
It’s always important to take the audience on the journey of the show. In shows that are completely spontaneous and made up on the spot, it’s an easy trap for the performers to forget about the needs of the audience, and just have fun on their own. Not with the Society.
I would say my favorite moment was the first line/last line scene Kirby and I did. Pretty cool to have such an honest heartwarming scene in a comedy show – not only do the actors have to buy in but so does the audience and I think both happen.
One of the highlights for both cast and audience alike was a scene from a setup called “First Line/Last Line”. That’s where we get as a suggestion from the audience, as you may be now have guessed, the first line of a scene, and completely unrelated last line.
Kirby Heyborne and Zanon Schmidt took those two bookend-lines and created a masterpiece between them.
We do a lot of funny things during our shows. But there was a quiet, tender moment moment between Zanon and me during “First Line Last Line.” There were some laughs but there were also some real emotions. The scene ended with 2 brothers saying goodbye but knowing that they would always stay connected through a model helicopter they built together as kids. It was a magical moment of improv I will remember forever.
The whole musical was so joyful and the songs! My goodness, we had guitars and pianos going an an epic sing along protest rally song with the audience and love ballads with rich harmonies.
I also died laughing at the Super Bowl commercial for Dragon Hot Potato Chips. Zanon’s dragon was perfect.
It always amazes me how a simple 3 minute scene, made up on the spot under pressure of entertaining and audience, can still resonate and make me laugh and remember it several weeks later.
That’s the power of a perfect storm.
